Today is the first day of the Summer Reading Program at our local Martin County Public Library and we are celebrating in a very big way. I'm also celebrating with Raylan at home. Here is how we are kicking off Summer Reading...
The Summer Reading program is an annual program that is designed to illustrate the joy of reading and reduce the loss of reading skills during summer break. It is a free program that is available to all children from birth to age 18. It is divided up into age groups. The program includes performers, crafts, snacks, games and reading activities to each age group weekly. Children can also participate in Scholarship Sweepstakes. Children who read the most books during the Summer Program also have a chance at winning a bike. It is such a wonderful event and children always have so much fun participating. Today, we are kicking off the program with live Penguins and baby Sharks from Newport Aquarium. The Children are sure to love it! I am also kicking off some reading fun with Raylan at home. He loves to read, but I want to further instill his love for reading. I also want him to have fun this summer, so I fixed him up a basket full of books and goodies for him to enjoy.
This basket consists of books and some of his favorite things
I chose two books of things that really interest him. He loves heavy equipment so I knew he would love reading these books.
I also picked out a coloring book for Raylan
He loves popcorn, so popping open a good book with some popcorn is a great idea.
Raylan also loves S'mores, so why not encourage him to read S'more (some more)
I also picked out his favorites of juice and a fruit snack
Summer is supposed to be fun and full of activities so Sidewalk Chalk is great for keeping him busy
Water guns to keep him cool while having tons of fun
Raylan loves bubbles, so he can have a blast with plenty of bubbles.
I thought this little basket was a great way for Raylan to celebrate the first day of participating in the Summer Reading Program and to Kickoff Summer. It is full of reading activities and things for Summer fun. He definitely shouldn't get bored this summer! He loves to read, but I want to continue encouraging him to read. I want reading to be a fun experience for him. Hopefully, he will read plenty of books this summer and make tons of fun memories. Does your child participate in any Summer reading programs? How do you encourage your child to read?
I suggest kicking off Summer Reading with some great books and some great activities for Summer fun!
