How We Save Money On Groceries


One of the most stressful things for people to do seems to be grocery shopping. I used to despise being the one to have to go grocery shop, but now that I am saving money, I don't mind it so much.  It actually took me a while to get to where I wanted to be with our grocery budget. Thanks to some amazing tips from Whitney from Come Home for Comfort, I have been able to come up with a system that works best for our family of 3.  Be sure to check out all of Whitney's great tips. I only shop between 2-3 stores. We don't have many options and the closest Wal-mart is 30 minutes away. Occasionally I grocery shop at Wal-mart, but mostly I keep it local with Save-a-lot being my top choice.


  1. Buy Meat that is on sale- I never purchase meat that is not on sale. I prefer to go with the pick 5 packages for $19.99. I love this option because you can Mix or Match your meats. It allows you to have 5 different kinds of meats to choose from. The 5 packages for $19.99 option is also great for deals like frozen Chicken Nuggets and Pizzas. You can mix those as well.
  2. Stockpile Canned Food and other items that are on sale- I currently have a good stockpile going of corn, mixed vegetables, kidney beans, and petite diced tomatoes. I buy canned foods in bulk that are on sale or of what we use the most.
  3. Go meatless one or two days a week- Thankfully my family likes pastas and other items that are meatless so it is easy for us to go meatless a few times a week.
  4. Fix meals that can last for a day or two-  I love making Chili's and Soups because it doesn't take a lot of ingredients to make them and they can be reheated and ate the next day. 
  5. Opt for the cheaper brands- I have found that most brands taste the same, so why pay more for the name. My husband actually prefers the cheaper brand of diet mountain dew from Save-a-lot and I prefer the cheaper brand of water. This saves a lot of money!
  6. Only buy fruit and vegetables that are on sale- Bananas are always fairly cheap, so they are our fruit of choice.
  7. Buy Groceries weekly
  8. Menu Plan- I cannot stress this one enough! I write down everything we need for the week for school and work lunches. Then, I plan out what we are having for dinner each night. I cook Monday through Friday and save the weekends for dining out. For breakfast, I purchase simple things like eggs, pop tarts, oatmeal and Bisquick Mix.  Everything is planned out from drinks, to cereals to dinner ideas. Pinterest is great for giving you ideas!

By using all of these tips I have been able to drastically save money on our groceries. I can usually feed our family of 3 for around $55 a week. It takes some work, but you can save money on groceries if you try. I would rather save money on groceries and have that money go toward a bill or something else useful or even a vacation fund. Stop overspending on groceries and try Whitney's tips and these tips of mine. I guarantee it will help you start saving money.
