As Christians, many of us are more than a little averse to technology. We fear the effect it can have on us in relation to our faith, and we can warn others, including our children and those we fellowship with on the dangers technology can pose.
For example, we might be mindful of the way social media can eat into our prayer times. And we might show concern when our children spend more time playing video games than reading the Bible. And while these are valid concerns - we do need to spend more time in prayer than reading through our Facebook posts, and our children do need to read the Bible a little more - we should also consider the benefits of technology to our faith.
Consider the following examples.
#1: Download an app
Instead of downloading Candy Crush and other such apps on your phone, you might want to download something that will support you on your Christian journey instead. For example, if you are overladen with Bible commentaries and other study books, you might want to download similar on your phone. Consider these Bible-study apps, for example. Not only do they cost less than the books that you might ordinarily buy, but they are lighter to carry around in your pocket too! Browse your app store for any other download that could benefit your faith journey.
#2: Connect with your Christian friends online
When you're using Facebook, send your friends an inspiring Christian message to brighten their day. They might then afford you the same blessing once in a while. You might also create a Facebook group for your church group, as that will give you the opportunity to send prayer requests and church notices quickly and easily to others. Coming away from Facebook for a moment (notice how it can quickly take hold of our lives and discussions), you might also consider this church online platform. This is a simple way to connect with your Bible study group and can be used for both lesson and discussion purposes. There are bound to be other ways to fellowship with others online, so commit to research to find out more.
#3: Browse the internet
The internet is a fantastic resource and offers much more than social media, online shopping, and funny cat videos. You can grow in your faith by reading Christian blogs, listening to podcasts by Christian speakers, and researching what churches around the world are doing to make disciples and grow in their spiritual disciplines. There are plenty of online communities too, so you might want to sign up to Facebook groups and other online forums that give Christians the opportunity to share ideas and encourage one another. Bookmark some of these sites and then prioritize them over any site that might eat into your time.
#4: Read Christian books
If you have a smartphone or tablet, download the Kindle app (or any other book reader), and then browse the Christian sections of online booksellers. You can then download the book/s of your choice, be that the Bible itself, or any of one of these bestsellers in Christian living. Buying the e-copies of these books are generally cheaper than paperback and hardback copies, and give you the convenience to read them whether you're at home or on the go.
Finally
We can't get away from technology; it is a large part of the world we live in. However, rather than fear it, we should embrace it instead, especially in the ways we have mentioned here. Let us know what you think, and if you know of any other ways we can use technology to support our faith journeys, please share your ideas with us.
Excellent post! I have been using The Bible app to follow the chronological plan for reading the bible in a year and I listen to the scripture when I'm getting ready in the mornings.
