Many of us start a new year with grand plans to get fit and eat more vegetables, but mental health is a matter that is often overlooked. The reality is that well-being should be a priority for everyone. If you’re looking to boost your health and happiness levels, here are some simple ways to look after your mental health.

Time-management tips
Many of us are prone to stress and anxiety because we live our lives at a fast pace, and we feel like we’re chasing our tails or trying to spin too many plates. If a lack of time is making life difficult, or you feel under pressure to work through an endless to-do list, managing your time more effectively could help. Use a diary or a planning app to keep track of your commitments, and don’t be afraid to say no to your employer or your colleagues if you’re already working overtime, or you’re craving a quiet, relaxing evening at the end of a busy day. Asking for help can also make a difference.
Talking
Talking is one of the most beneficial means of boosting mental health and helping to manage emotions and keep stress at bay. Sometimes, we build things up in our minds, and we get bogged down trying to solve problems on our own or switch off. If you’ve got things on your mind, or you’d like somebody else’s opinion or advice, don’t hesitate to reach out. Some people find chatting to friends or family members beneficial, while others seek help from therapists or services that are designed for dealing with traumatic or difficult scenarios like post abortion support groups or bereavement counseling. It can be challenging to open up, especially if you’re used to keeping everything to yourself, but taking that first step can be very cathartic.
Taking a break
Sometimes, we can get caught up in a cycle that involves working and other commitments, for example, raising children or caring for relatives. It’s wonderful to be a parent and to be a pillar of support for others, but you must take time to relax, recharge your batteries and focus on your own health and wellbeing. Taking a break, even if it just means having half an hour to go for a walk, get some fresh air or sit and pray, can really improve your mindset.
Getting your body moving
We tend to think of exercise as a physical health booster, but it can also be amazingly beneficial for your mind. Physical activity increases your serotonin and dopamine levels and it also triggers the release of endorphins, which make you feel good. Exercising frequently can also reduce the risk of stress and improve sleep quality. If you’re not an active person, try and increase your activity levels gradually by taking walks, going for a jog or joining beginner’s exercise classes.
